  1. Preparing a seedbed that receives morning sun and is protected from the wind. The midday sun will cause the plant to wilt. A good choice for planting sweet basil seeds is the east side of the house. Loosen the soil and remove all weeds, grass, rocks and debris from the floor.
  2. Plant taller varieties of sweet basil seeds in the bottom of the bed ready. Smaller and dwarf varieties are well on the front of the bed. Plant seeds at a depth of 1/8 inch (3 mm), covering them lightly with soil.
  3. Quilting around the plant with organic material such as leaves or composting. Fertilizing the soil around the plant with a fertilizer organic, such as fish emulsion.
  4. Water the plants or seeds well. Keep the soil slightly moist.
  5. Use basil as companion plant as it repels aphids and mites, but does not do well near mint plants to prevent infestation from other pests.
